Rhododendron vernicosum is a rhododendron plant species native to western Sichuan, southeastern Xizang, and western Yunnan, China, where it grows at altitudes of 2600–4300 meters.
It is a shrub that typically grows to 1–5 meters in height, with leathery leaves that are oblong-ovate to oblong-elliptic. The flowers are fragrant and pale pink to white.
The original botanical illustration was done by Mathilda Smith and first published in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, London., vol. 146.
Matilda Smith (1854–1926) was a botanical artist whose work appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine for over forty years.
She became the first artist to depict New Zealand's flora in depth and the first official artist of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, England.
