Mucuna deplax belongs to a genus ( Macuna) of around 100 accepted species of climbing vines and shrubs of the family Fabaceae (bean or legume family) found worldwide in the woodlands of tropical areas.

Like other legumes, Mucuna plants bear bean pods. They are generally bat-pollinated and produce seeds that are buoyant in water which often end up in the ocean which is why they are often called sea-beans.

In some macuna spices, the beans (seeds) resemble an eye or a hamburger which explains the common names like deer-eye beans, donkey-eye beans, ox-eye beans, or hamburger seed.

The original botanical illustration was done by Etienne Denisse and published in the lavishly-illustrated Flore d’Amérique (1843-46).

Etienne Denisse (1785 – 1861) was a lithographer for the French royal court and spent his early career at the botanical garden of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris.

He was soon employed by the French government to work in the French West Indies where he spent years illustrating and collecting plants from the region and sending specimens back to France.
