Scarlet Larkspur (Delphinium cardinale), also know as cardinal larkspur is a wildflower belonging to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae).
It is native to California and Baja California, where it grows on coastal, inland, and desert chaparral slopes.
The above-ground part of the plant contains toxic alkaloids.
The original illustration is by an unknown artist but it was probably first published in Belgium around 1850 by Louis van Houtte.
Louis van Houtte was the proprietor of the largest nursery of its time on the European continent.
Van Houtte collected numerous high-quality botanical periodicals to advertise the plants he sold.
Many beautiful botanical prints were created by his own printing office in the middle of his gardens, including this one.
Decades later in the year 1885, the illustration was published in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, Vol. 81, the longest running botanical periodical featuring color illustrations of plants.
