Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), also known as Bachelor's Button, is an annual flowering plant in the aster, daisy or sunflower family (Asteraceae).
It is native to Europe and in the past, it often grew as a weed in cornfields (wheat, barley, rye, or oats), hence its name.
It is now endangered in its native habitat due to increased agriculture and the use of herbicides.
However, because of its beautiful flowers, it is now often planted in gardens for ornamental purposes and it is now naturalized in many other parts of the world, including North America and parts of Australia.
The edible flower of the cornflower is used in herbal medicine and as culinary decoration
In folklore, cornflowers were often worn by young men in love; if the flower faded too quickly, it was taken as a sign that the man's love was not returned.
The original botanical illustration featured on the mug is by Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) who was the official court artist to Queen Marie Antoinette. The illustration was first published in 1805 in "La botanique de J.J. Rousseau".
