The flowers of the plant resemble the shape of human female genitals, hence the Latin name of the genus "Clitoria", from "clitoris".
This plant is native to tropical equatorial Asia but has also been introduced to Africa, Australia, and America.
The plant is used as a coloring agent, in cooking, and as herbal medicine.
The original botanical illustration is by Miss M. A. Burnett and was first published in 1842 in her "Plantæ Utiliores: Or Illustrations of Useful Plants, Employed in the Arts and Medicine."
