It is a species of flowering plant that belongs to the family hydrangea Family (Hydrangeaceae).

It is a deciduous shrub, native to Japan but is widely cultivated in many parts of the world in many climates.

The original illustration was first published in 1870 in "Flora Japonica" by Philipp Franz von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini.

He was well known for his studies of Japanese flora and fauna and for the introduction of Western medicine in Japan. He was the father of the first female Japanese doctor.
