Common Sunflower (Helianthus annuus), is a large herbaceous flowering plant of the genus Helianthus.
It is grown for its edible oil and edible fruits. The plant is also popular as an ornamental plant in domestic gardens.
The name sunflower either derives from the flower's head's shape, which resembles the sun, or that the blooming plant appears to slowly turn its flower towards the sun as the latter moves across the sky on a daily basis.
The original illustration featured on the magnets was first published in "Illustratio Systematis Exualis Linnaei" (An illustration of the sexual system of Linnæus) (1770-1777) by Johann Sebastian Müller, also known as John Miller (1715–1792).
He was was a German engraver, illustrator and botanist. He was born in Nuremberg, Germany but lived most of his life in London, England.
