Balloon Flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) is a species of herbaceous flowering perennial plant of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae), and the only member of the genus Platycodon.
It is native to East Asia. The English common name "Balloon Flower" refers to the balloon-shaped flower buds. It is also known as Chinese bellflower and platycodon.
The plant is used as food, herbal medicine and for ornamental purposes.
The orginal botanical illustration is by Abraham Jacobus Wendel and was first publised 1868 in Holland in "Flora: afbeeldingen en beschrijvingen van boomen, heesters, éénjarige planten, enz. voorkomende in de Nederlandsche tuinen" by H. Witte and A. J. Wendel.
